Simon thinks of himself a financial interpreter taking each customer on a journey. His clients value him as a listener and someone who simplifies the experience, making it smooth, simple and comfortable. He wants the customer to feel ‘at home’.
He measures success by the stories he gets to tell. The better the story, the more success. He says: I love it when someone has a complexity that I can help with. I love it when I can use a previous story to give the next person comfort that their situation is not so bad.
Simon come into mortgage broking with solid experience in sales, customer service and business ownership behind him. He’s chalked up almost 20 years in the finance industry.
His experiences have shaped a strong ability to understand financials and to navigate the banking environment, and an in-depth technical understanding of the industry; while engaging with a diverse range of people of different ages, experiences and backgrounds.
As he strives to build a sustainable, balanced, compliant business for himself, he is driven by helping people and getting great stories. It makes his day when a client calls to tell him about their new car or what their kids are doing; and he’s driven to provide for his family, to support them financially and emotionally.
Simon is based at Highgate Hill, with as many clients from greater Brisbane as from interstate.
Further afield, he says skiing and Japan refuel his engine. The Zwart family lived in Sapporo for a year, leaving two days before COVID shut down borders in 2020. Simon and his wife studied tea ceremony (Urasenke) and the children went to the local Japanese school… and skied.
Client
Client Story: Eve had previously been a home owner, and had purchased her first home in 2020. When she purchased Eve was a new Australian resident and was required to go through the FIRB (foreign investment review board) and pay significant fees to purchase her home. After the purchase the uncertainty of COVID kicked in. Just like everyone else at the time, Eve didn’t know what was going to happen next. As a single mum she did what she felt was right at the time and sold her home. Eve sold her home in 2021 at a lower price than her initial purchase price. With standard buying and selling costs, plus the extra impact of the FIRB fees Eve was now behind. Since the sale, Eve had watched house prices in Brisbane go up 5% - 10% per year. Being a single mum, with a daughter in Primary school, Eve was thinking about housing certainty for her daughter as high school approaches. Eve wanted to find a way to purchase a property now to provide housing and education security.
Solution: Simon worked with Eve and researched the Family Guarantee scheme. The family guarantee scheme supports single parents to purchase a home with as little as a 2% deposit without having to pay for Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). Using the Family Guarantee Scheme allowed Eve to make an offer on a property with the funds that she had after the sale of her house, and saved her around $15,000 which would have been payable as LMI. Simon then worked with Eve to discuss the types of loans available through the lenders who offer the Family Guarantee scheme. Eve settled on a 2 year fixed interest loan which gave her greater purchasing power than a variable loan. This allowed her to make on offer on a 3 bedroom duplex for $560,000.
